Stand Up Guys ?

Mark Glass, Patch blogger:?**??It?s almost always a treat to watch old pros play to their strength in familiar waters. This crime drama with generous doses of humor and sentimentality serves up Christopher Walken, Al Pacino and Alan Arkin in one last walk on the wild side. Pacino is fresh out of jail after 28 years for a robbery that went bad; partnerWalken kept in touch, and greets him at the gates. Arkin was their wheel man, now in a nursing home from end-stage emphysema, making one of the geezers a wheezer, too.

These guys were small timers, with little to show for their careers. Even worse, the Big Boss expects Walken to whack Pacino, because one of Al?s bullets killed the guy?s son in the battle that sent Al up the river. No credit for his long silence that kept the rest of them out of prison. The film covers a long day and night that may, or may not, be Al?s last. That?s time enough for? some hookers, boozing, burglary and bloodshed, along with covering a subplot, or two.

Walken and Pacino are the tough guys, with Arkin adding a different skill set to their criminal capabilities. They could have called the film? Two and a Half Thugs. Whatever the premise, the trio sells the product nicely, and should please their legions of fans, as the actors and their characters live up to the title. Full Review

Amour

  • Running time:?
  • Starring:
  • Rated: PG-13

Mark Glass, Patch blogger:?***??This French drama about an elderly couple dealing with the wife?s end-stage deterioration has been earning acclaim around the globe for its stunning performances (John-Louis Trintignant, Emmanuelle Riva), and sensitive treatment of an emotionally draining ordeal for the players and viewers by director Michael Haneke. The casting of these octogenarian spouses is not only effective cinematically, but interesting for pairing Trintignant, a major figure in European films for decades, with an actress with a much lower profile outside the EEC. Kudos to the Decider(s), since his turn caps a stellar career in fine style, and she garnered one of the film?s five Oscar nominations. (Amour?was not screened or released locally in time for consideration in the St. Louis Film Critics? 2012 voting.)?

In the early going and through flashbacks we see what a loving, cultured couple they were, with classical music at the core of their lives. That makes her descent into dementia seem like a particularly poignant loss to them, and to everyone they touched. As Trintignant struggles to tend to her needs, keeping her at home, rather than in the hands of strangers in strange environs, we feel both the loving devotion and the agonizing toll of the caretaking role he accepts.

The script?s unadorned view of their course should spark debates about the legitimacy of physician-assisted suicide, and inspire many to contemplate such possible futures, and make the tough decisions about their own living wills or other end-of-life directives.?Amour?is at once a celebration of, and cautionary tale about, the love underlying the lifetime commitments of those marriage vows. This exceptional film may not fit anyone?s definition of entertaining, but it undeniably nourishes our hearts and minds. Full Review

Bullet to the Head

The Hollywood Reporter: "Like the amped up comeback tour of two rockers who had their heyday sometime in the mid-'80s, Sylvester Stallone and director Walter Hill (48 HRS., The Warriors) join forces for a hard-hitting exercise in beefy, brainless fun with the New Orleans-set actioner Bullet to the Head."?Full Review

Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters

Mark Glass, Patch blogger:?Of all the classic fairy tales stretched or twisted into feature films, this is one of the least likely...and less successful. H & G (Jeremy Renner, Gemma Arterton) survived the witch and her candy-coated honey trap of a hovel, then grew up to become itinerant witch slayers in a vaguely Medieval era.?

They are summoned to one imperiled hamlet after nearly a dozen children have been abducted. They soon realize that a coven or two of evildoers is apparently massing in the adjacent forbidding forest for some major event. So much for the plot. The rest is all about the f/x, as H & G do their thing with an arsenal of anachronistically advanced weapons, which they need because these witches show some mad Ninja skills to go with their magical powers. The fights are more fast and furious than the auto races in a certain series of flicks that traded on those terms.?Full Review

Gangster Squad

Review from Patch blogger Mark Glass:?Movie Review: Gangster Squad

Austin Chronicle: "Despite the unrelenting action and the terrific cast, Gangster Squad comes up more scattered than successful." Austin Chronicle.?Full Review

A.O. Scott of The New York Times: "His (Fleischer) first feature, "Zombieland," was a half-witty genre parody. This one might be described as genre zombie-ism: the hysterical, brainless animation of dead clich?s reduced to purposeless, compulsive killing. Too self-serious to succeed as pastiche, it has no reason for being beyond the parasitic urge to feed on the memories of other, better movies."?Full Review

Ann Hornaday of Washington Post: "Slick, sick, self-consciously stylish and defiantly shallow, Gangster Squad is one of those movies you can't talk about without invoking other (often better) movies. A lot of movies."?Full Review

Mark Banschick, MD: Unforgivable Hurt: A Cheater's Four Choices

Jenny and Peter live in a white picket-fenced house on Washington Drive with their two young kids. For the most part, their lives are vanilla -- pedestrian. Peter's work as a lawyer means that he spends long hours at his firm, while Jenny's day follows a typical soccer mom's schedule. Every day pretty much follows the same routine. After dinner, and once the kids have been put to bed, Jenny and Peter have one-on-one time. They make plans for the weekend, pay bills, watch TV and then go to bed.

Enter Jake. Recently divorced, Jake moves into the house next door. Being neighborly, Jenny and Peter go over to introduce themselves. They learn that Jake's two children, who are roughly the same ages as Jenny and Peter's kids, go to the same soccer practice. Jenny offers to help out with driving.

An affair evolves. It begins slowly. When Jake does have time to watch the occasional soccer match, he and Jenny sit together and then take the kids for ice cream. They enjoy each other's company, the conversation flows easily, and chemistry develops. The friendship morphs into a thrilling affair.

The attraction is physical and mental. The sex is electric -- it amplifies their magnetic connection.

One day, a friend tells Peter he saw Jake and Jenny enter a hotel holding hands. Peter doesn't know what to do, maybe his friend was mistaken. He decides that before making accusations, he'll apply the mantra he uses every day in his legal practice -- innocent until proven guilty. Later that night, when Jenny is in the shower, he looks at Jenny's open computer screen. And there it is: that one incriminating email. It's so intimate and inappropriate that Peter knows without a shadow of a doubt, Jenny is guilty.

Peter confronts Jenny and she confesses.

Now what? For many like Peter, Jenny's betrayal is an unpardonable wrong. If she was unhappy in the marriage, why not mention it, seek counseling, or ask for a divorce? Unfortunately, Jenny lives a messy life like a lot of people in this world.

There are four basic ways this scenario can pan out (or a mixture of one or two).

1. Jenny can ask for forgiveness and hope to reconcile. This approach is common. Many people have affairs during a marriage, and some partners will forgive. For this to work, Jenny must cut all ties with Jake. She and Peter might consider moving to start afresh. Jenny's years, history and life with Peter and the kids should count for more than a six-month fling. The question Peter (and Jenny) face is whether they want to mend their broken marriage. It's not easy, but it can be done.

Here's how it would play out:
- Jenny must feel regret and endeavor to make amends.
- If Peter senses Jenny's sincerity, he may slowly begin to trust her again.
- Ideally, Peter will eventually accept Jenny's apology. Resentment is poison.
- Peter may begin to see his role in weakening the marriage.
- Peter and Jenny start fresh, with renewed commitment and honesty.

2. Jenny asks for forgiveness but the marriage ends nonetheless. Jenny or Peter may not want to reconcile. Either way, Jenny can still feel regret and make amends. She can do this by not blaming Peter for the affair and doing whatever she can to be supportive of Peter during the divorce. Jenny needs to protect her rights but not escalate things unnecessarily. She'll have to accept that Peter may not forgive her. Or he may come around, especially if he ends up feeling okay after the divorce. The question: what about Jake?

- Jenny may insist on continuing her relationship with Jake. This is not a great idea. It would be wise to wait a long while before seeing him again. Things need to settle down.
- Jenny drops Jake realizing that his presence confuses the children and humiliates Peter.

3. Peter calls off the marriage and makes no room for discussion. This is the more severe version of option two. Here, Jenny may feel badly, but Peter won't have it. It's a simple formula: Jenny is a terrible person. No one would deny Peter's right to be angry, but it may obscure what's really going on. Peter need not forgive, but what if he uses his "moral" position to poison the children against their mother? Or, what if he's threatening in public? Under these circumstances, Jenny will need good council and psychotherapy both to protect herself and to not make matters worse. Anger keeps people engaged, even as they break apart.

4. Jenny can blame Peter and leave the marriage. In this scenario, Jenny is behaving like a typical narcissist. Narcissists feel entitled to what they want, have zero consideration for consequences, objectify others, and show little remorse. Jenny might justify her deceit and the affair. She may even blame Peter and accuse him of playing the victim. Where narcissists are concerned, it's best to cut your losses and move on.

Most narcissists lack the capacity for regret or remorse; they are too preoccupied with justifying whatever they are doing. Regret is a powerful human experience. It makes us moral beings.

Why Regret Is Important: Regret involves introspection and holding yourself accountable. It comes when you learn painful lessons. If Jenny experiences regret, then she'll realize that she not only betrayed Peter, but she betrayed herself as well. Jenny may regret the affair, but she'll also regret not having confronted her marriage problems earlier.

Many people have affairs -- a breaking of a sacred trust. But some know what regret is all about. Those people become better souls in the long run. And, sometime the aggrieved party gets it -- and heals.

Former New York City Mayor Ed Koch dies at 88

One of the city's most outspoken politicians, Ed Koch was known for his no-nonsense, colorful personality. A lifelong Democrat, he became New York's 105 mayor, a job he said he wanted for life. He died of congestive heart failure Friday morning at the age of 88. NBC's Ron Allen reports.

By Matthew DeLuca, Staff Writer, NBC News

Former New York City Mayor Edward Irving Koch, a man as colorful as the city he helped save from financial ruin, died Friday of congestive heart failure. He was 88.

His brashness and thumbs-up confidence ? and ?How?m I doin?? greeting ? became symbols of Gotham chutzpah over his three terms at the city?s helm. And while New Yorkers did not always answer Hizzoner?s trademark question in the affirmative, Koch couldn?t have cared less as he tried to govern a city that many thought was ungovernable. He finally left City Hall in 1989.

?I?m the sort of person who will never get ulcers,? he told reporters in 1978. ?Why? Because I say exactly what I think. I?m the sort of person who might give other people ulcers.?

Reverend Al Sharpton, who locked horns with Koch through his time as mayor, praised the man he criticized as forthright in a statement on his passing.

?He would not patronize or deceive you,? said Sharpton, an MSNBC host, remembering that his first arrest for civil disobedience was at a 1978 sit-in protesting a Koch policy. ?He said what he meant. He meant what he said. He fought for what he believed in.?

Born in the Bronx in 1924, Koch and his family soon decamped to Newark, New Jersey, where he spent his childhood. After graduating from high school at the age of 16, Koch returned to the city he loved and enrolled at the City College of New York, but his undergraduate studies were interrupted by World War II when he was drafted in 1943.

After serving as an infantryman in Europe, Koch enrolled at New York University Law School. He built up a law practice before he entered politics to support Adlai Stevenson?s presidential campaign in 1952.

Koch?s own political career began in earnest in the early 1960s, organizing for the Democratic party in Greenwich Village on Manhattan?s west side. In 1963, he ousted Tammany Hall chief Carmine DeSapio, winning a post as a district leader.

Ed Koch served 12 years as mayor of New York, from 1977-1989. He passed away on Friday at the age of 88, succumbing to congestive heart failure.

From 1969 to 1977, Koch served as a congressman representing New York?s 17th Congressional District. He mounted an unlikely run for mayor in 1977, ultimately defeating better-known candidates including incumbent Abraham Beame and congresswoman Bella Abzug.

Throughout his career, Koch was known for his Bronx-flavored bon mots. ?If you agree with me on nine out of 12 issues, vote for me,? Koch once said. ?If you agree with me on 12 out of 12 issues, see a psychiatrist.?

And he brought his forceful personality and attention to detail to the job of mayor, said New York City historian Fred Siegel.

?His campaign slogan was ?Why not try competence?? and he demonstrates it. He really knows the budget, he?s on top of things,? Siegel said of Koch?s first years in office. Later, however, Koch ?lost interest in the details of running the city,? Siegel said.

Koch?s aspirations went beyond the five boroughs, but more illustrious offices eluded him. A bid for governor in 1982 was felled by Mario M. Cuomo.

Yet the same personality that helped bring Koch national fame also divided some New Yorkers against him over time.

In 2012, Koch recalled walking to the Brooklyn Bridge during a 1980 transit strike to exhort commuters. ?I began to yell, ?Walk over the bridge! Walk over the bridge! We?re not going to let these bastards bring us to our knees!?? Koch recalled.

?His mouth got in the way of his policies,? said investigative journalist Wayne Barrett, who chronicled the Koch years.

The mayor, however, remained forever close-lipped about the most private areas of his personal life, even as some speculated about his sexuality.

While opponents occasionally tried to make political hay of the whispers, Koch responded with silence: ?Whether I am straight or gay or bisexual is nobody?s business but mine,? he wrote in his 1992 autobiography.

Koch?s final term was tarnished by corruption, as a scandal involving Queens Borough President Donald Manes threatened to ensnare the mayor, but never did. He lost a shot at a fourth term to the more reserved David Dinkins.

?The people have spoken,? Koch said on the occasion of his losing, ?and they must be punished.?

But Koch, who became the first city mayor to host Saturday Night Live in 1983, did not allow his national profile to dim after losing the luster of the mayoralty. He also published a collection of newspaper columns critical of Rudy Giuliani in 1999 titled ?Giuliani: Nasty Man.? And for two years in the late Nineties, he wore a black robe on the television show ?People?s Court.?

On Friday, New York Governor Andrew Cuomo ? the son of former governor Mario -- paid tribute to the man who won?t be leaving New York, even in death. (Koch bought one of Manhattan?s last burial plots for $20,000 in 2008.)

?No New Yorker has ? or likely ever will ? voice their love for New York City in such a passionate and outspoken manner than Ed Koch,? Cuomo said. ?Mr. Mayor was never one to shy away from taking a stand that he believed was right, no matter what the polls said or what was politically correct.?

New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg said in a statement that the city had lost ?an irrepressible icon, our most charismatic cheerleader and champion.?

Senator Charles Schumer lauded Koch as a man of whom New Yorker?s could be proud: ?Every atom in his body lived, breathed, spoke, and exuded the city. He helped save the city and, perhaps most important of all, gave it confidence when it was beginning to doubt itself, which helped pave the way for the growth and prosperity we?re still experiencing today.?

Koch died around 2 a.m. Friday after battling a variety of illnesses. He had been hospitalized in September with anemia and in December with a respiratory infection, before his final hospitalization this week.

A funeral service will be held on Monday.

MSNBC's Mika Brzezinski reports that Ed Koch, the former three-term mayor of New York City, died of congestive heart failure, at the age of 88.

Plans to 3D print Moon building

Architects Fosters and Partners have revealed designs for a building on the Moon that could be constructed from material already on its surface.

An inflatable structure would be transported from Earth, then covered with a shell built by 3D printers.

The printers, operated by robots, would use soil from the Moon, known as regolith, to build the layered cover.

The proposed site for the building is the southern pole of the Moon.

It is designed to house four people and could be extended, the firm said.

In 2010 a team of researchers from Washington State University found that artificial regolith containing silicon, aluminium, calcium, iron and magnesium oxide could be used by 3D printers to create solid objects.

The latest plans are the result of a collaboration between a number of organisations including the European Space Agency.

The consortium tested the practicalities of using a printer on the Moon by setting up a D-shape 3D printer, which are used to print very large house-sized structures, in a vacuum chamber with simulated lunar material.

'Fascinating and unique'

"As a practice, we are used to designing for extreme climates on Earth and exploiting the environmental benefits of using local, sustainable materials," said Xavier De Kestelier, a partner in the firm's specialist modelling group.

"It has been a fascinating and unique design process, which has been driven by the possibilities inherent in the material."

Buildings on this planet by the architect firm include Wembley Stadium, the World Trade Center in New York and Beijing airport.

Last week US company Deep Space Industries (DSI) announced plans to use asteroid material for manufacture by harvesting them and using 3D printers sent into space.

The company is also developing a bespoke 3D printer called MicroGravity Foundry for the purpose, it said, and hopes to be ready to start production by 2020.
