There are some fascinating discussions going on in FastWebFormula.com, a premium and up-to-the-minute training portal for businesses and Internet marketers, and founder James Schramko recently addressed some key issues that could affect the way webpreneurs and business owners run their companies. From tracking market share percentage to focusing on handling less websites, from shaking the obsession over SEO-focused marketing to learning from the right sources, Schramko pulls no punches in this weeks video update on SuperFastBusiness.
The highly successful CEO and Internet marketing expert opens his video with a call to online businesses to check your numbers, in particular website visits, conversion rates, and market share.
You need to know how many visits come to your website, Schramko advises, how many of those visits convert into customers, and, of course, you need to know of all the market share available to you, how much of that are you actually selling. Have you maxed it out or are you not even scraping the surface? The SuperFastBusiness CEO mentions the need for tracking web visits and recognizing which visits convert into actual sales.
Schramko also points out that knowing such data and introducing them in visual reports can allow companies to present far more compelling and persuasive sales pitches.
Apart from collecting data into a visual presentation, increasing sales and profits can also come from implementing strategies that keep companies operating at its premium, strategies which Schramko himself has had quite a success in applying. For companies that buy a domain name in heavy frequency, Schramko underscores the need for assessing whats in your cupboard.
Schramko, who also heads VREDirect.com which sells domain names and websites, suggests, Focus on less domains and less websites, and make better websites out of them. Go a bit deeper and a little bit less broad. That seems to work now since sites like Google reward quality and relevancy and unless you have a very large team, you should be focusing more of your efforts on less of your websites. So if youve got any leftover domains, if youve got a stock surplus, get rid of them. Youre probably never going to develop them and the renewal fee is just going to add up over the years with compound effect.
From domain names and websites, the Internet marketing expert moves on to the question of Search Engine Optimization (SEO): can companies do it on their own or should they hire done for you SEO? The importance of SEO over the Internet is undeniable, however, Schramko points out, it is not the only option in web marketing.
He clarifies at length, What do you have in place right now that you can leverage better not just on Google, but in general? Can you place another product within your product range that you can cross sell to your own customer base? Can you create premium content in the form of a podcast or video or blog post or interview that you can put out there for people to find. Not just in Google but in YouTube and in iTunes, and can you put a press release about that? So dont just obsess all your focus on SEO.
Schramko instead recommends, Start your own affiliate program. Go and buy some banners. Do some forum posts. Put your link in the signature file. Create a kick ass blog with amazing content. These should be the priority.
Schramko also touches very briefly on recognizing which sources to rely on and which systems can actually bring results for businesses. The SuperFastBusiness CEO encourages webpreneurs to consider investing in a Kindle library instead of inflated Guru courses, That should get you amazing business books and I think that would probably be a better use of your time youre going to get an education no matter what.
Whether its using numbers and statistics or applying techniques other than SEO, James Schramko has got strategies that make sense and bring results. Get more in-depth blueprints to profitable businesses on FastWebFormula.com and see about the latest marketing updates on SuperFastBusiness.com every day.

Sometimes the most fascinating bits from a tradeshow come from those booth in between major manufacturers, and while we're certainly not claiming that the Hi-Call is "the best product at IFA" as its spokesperson suggested to us with a smile, they're nothing if not interesting. Hi-Fun's gloves are Bluetooth headsets -- or, well, handsets -- with the speaker built into the thumb and the mic in the pinky, so you can talk by doing the traditional "call me" hand gesture.
Pairing is simple enough for anyone who's done the process on a more traditional headset -- the button is built into the top of the glove, along with a button to end the call. We took the gloves for a spin, as you can see in the video below, calling the rep's very confused boss. In spite of turning up the handset volume as loud as possible, we had a lot of trouble actually hearing something on the showfloor -- and the fellow on the other end seemed to be having similar issues, leading to quite probably the first time I've ever used the phrase "I'm sorry, I can't hear you, I'm talking into a glove."
Hi-Call will be out in the beginning of October, just in time for the cold weather. It'll run you a not particularly cheap €49 for the pleasure of speaking into your pinky. Video evidence after the break.

When I enrolled in college, I was pretty sure I wanted to major in biology and absolutely sure that I didn?t want to go into a medical profession. In fact, I selected my college partly based on the number of biology classes offered that were not pre-medical in nature. Thus, I found it particularly ironic (and painful) when I was required to jump through a variety of hoops designed to eliminate individuals on the pre-med track who were not serious enough to actually be accepted to medical school. The most significant of these hurdles was chemistry. While I didn?t learn much chemistry as an undergraduate I did learn a lot about education (and how it shouldn?t work). The flaws in my undergraduate chemistry education became all the more apparent when I took many truly fabulous and truly educational chemistry classes in graduate school (courtesy of Professor Pam Mills, at Hunter College).
As an undergraduate biology major, I was required to take 18 credits of chemistry (8 credits of inorganic chemistry and 10 credits of organic chemistry). This is a good and reasonable requirement for a biology major since a solid understanding of chemistry is undoubtedly helpful for understanding the biological world. Sadly, the chemistry classes weren?t designed to be educational. In fact, on the first day of class, the chemistry professor stood up in front of the lecture hall and told all 600 students that the primary goal of the class was to weed out people who couldn?t get into medical school. Thus, the university would consider the class a success if it caused everyone who couldn?t hack the medical school admissions process to change majors, transfer to a different school, or even drop out of college altogether. The professor seemed like a nice guy; I suspect that he wasn?t comfortable being involved with a chemistry class that was designed to be an ordeal in the medieval sense of the word and the one thing he felt he could do about it was to describe the situation openly.
By the standards that the university set for the class, it was a success. When I began my second year of chemistry, there were only 200 students left. By any other measure, I?m afraid that the class was a failure. One semester my average was 55%, but, thanks to the curve, I received a B+. Obviously, most people were learning even less than I was. (This is something I try very hard not to dwell on when I need to see a doctor.)
But what made these classes so bad? As an educator, this is a question that I have spent a lot of time considering.
On the surface, the chemistry classes appeared to be run in a professional and reasonable manner. If the designer of the chemistry sequence was asked to explain the pedagogy, undoubtedly there would have been three or four learning tools mentioned. Information was supposed to enter the students? brains during the lecture periods and from reading the textbook. That information was supposed to be consolidated by completing problem sets for homework. Finally, there were the chemistry exams, which were intended to measure learning. Unfortunately, at no point was there any opportunity discuss ideas, ask questions, or get real-time feedback. This lack of opportunity to talk things through and have questions answered was, I believe, the single biggest problem.
There have been many, many research studies that demonstrate that learning must be active in order to be effective. It is absolutely essential for students to be able to take in information, manipulate it in their minds, put it out in a new format, and receive feedback to ensure that their understanding is accurate. Exams are not particularly useful feedback; by the time a test is given and graded, it is rather late to be telling a student for the first time that his or her ideas aren?t quite right. Instead, the real function of exams in chemistry, or any other subject, are to motivate students to study and to provide a relatively objective method of certifying that learning has taken place.
Fortunately, chemistry tutoring is almost the exact opposite of the classes I endured as an undergraduate. In a tutoring session there is nearly constant discussion, questioning, and feedback. This allows students to explore ideas and create understanding. It is a very effective way of developing a real understanding of challenging content and learning how to solve problems.
It?s true that private tutoring is generally one-on-one and is therefore very difficult to compare to large college classes. However, there is evidence that a properly structured large class can be quite effective. Indeed, there is a great deal of exciting research being done to discover more effective ways of teaching chemistry. Of course, that research is utterly useless if chemistry classes are mis-used as filtering devices. I do hope that my experience in undergraduate chemistry was the exception to the rule.

However, there is one issue that, despite plaguing thousands of people in Georgia and throughout the country, has received significantly less attention. Today, more and more people are finding themselves defending against claims of unpaid credit card debt made by credit card companies and, more commonly, debt collection agencies. Often, these cases are filed with little to no evidence of the debtor?s failure to make payment or even of the debt itself, leaving the court and all parties involved thoroughly confused and uncertain of how to handle the case.

The Pew Research Center recently conducted a study about the middle class. Its findings are distressing. The study reveals that the middle class is shrinking and has significantly lost wealth and income. Members of the middle class that participated in the study claim that it is now more difficult to maintain their standard of living since their homes and savings are in jeopardy. The study further reveals that few members of the middle class actually take personal responsibility for their financial challenges in this struggling economy.?Pressures on the middle class force alternate financial solutions.

Credit cards can provide a significant benefit for many consumers, allowing them to finance large or important purchases without requiring them to possess large amounts of liquid cash. However, having too many open credit accounts can lead to serious problems, like declining credit scores, unaffordable bills and debilitating debt. Data from Experian shows that the average consumer in the U.S. has three open credit cards. While this number may be manageable for some Florida residents, others may be unable to cope with the consequences that come with multiple credit accounts.

Bankruptcy courts evaluate the debtor?s assets in order to determine financial insolvency, and it is crucial that debtor?s provide a clear and accurate listing of all assets. Americans are allowed to pay the lowest tax they are legally obligated to pay and that is exactly what Mitt Romney has done over the past decade. The Republican presidential candidate and his wife, Anne, have used complex wealth transfer and estate planning techniques to minimize taxes and accrue an estimated $100 million for their family outside of their estate.
Bloomberg reports that in 1995 Romney created two trusts. One of the trusts was formed for their children with investments focused on appreciation and the other was for charity that provides a tax deduction and income.
?The Romneys have transferred assets into the family trust and invested them, amassing a substantial and diversified portfolio,? Bloomberg states. ?In 2010 alone, the trust realized more than $7 million in long-term capital gains, about $1.5 million in ordinary dividends and $741,407 in U.S. government interest, according to the trust?s tax return.?
This information indicates that Romney has taken advantage of tax planning techniques ?that are similar to what other high-net ?worth families do,? David Scott Sloan, chairman at the law firm Holland & Knight LLP in Boston, told Bloomberg.
Democrats have scrutinized Romney for exploiting the tax code saying that as a high-net-worth individual he is out of touch with many Americans. I, on the other hand, ask what American would knowingly pay more taxes than what he legally owes?
According to Bloomberg, the Romneys opened a defective grantor trust for their children. Using this type of trust, Romney (the grantor) has been able to pay the tax bill on the trust?s accumulating income for the benefit of his children. By not paying the taxes out of trust, the assets have more potential to grow outside of the estate.
State financial disclosure documents show that the Romneys also set up a charitable remainder trust (or CRUT). A CRUT is not just a nice way to move money out of an estate by donating to charity; it also pays income to the beneficiary and allows for a tax deduction amounting to the value that is expected to go to charity.
It is expected that Romney?s wallet will take a hit if President Barrack Obama reclaims his title as POTUS.
?The Romneys would pay higher taxes under the estate-tax proposal of President Barack Obama and would pay less under Romney?s plan. Obama has proposed increasing the estate tax from current levels (to a 45% top rate) and curtailing wealth-transfer strategies. The Republican presidential candidate wants to eliminate the estate tax, which currently applies to a top rate of 35% and a $10.24 million exemption on a married couple?s combined assets,? the article explains.
Assuming a combined taxable estate of $200 million after deductions for items such as administrative expenses and charitable contributions, a repeal of the levy may save the Romneys about $70 million in federal estate taxes after they both die, Bloomberg concludes. When compared with today?s rates, Obama?s tax proposal may cost the Romneys an extra $20 million.

While ?the cloud? may be the tech buzzword of the year, many Americans remain foggy about what the cloud really is and how it works. A new national survey by Wakefield Research, commissioned by Citrix, showed that most respondents believe the cloud is related to weather, while some referred to pillows, drugs and toilet paper. Those in the know claim working from home in their ?birthday suit? is the cloud?s greatest advantage. The good news is that even those that don?t know exactly what the cloud is recognize its economic benefits and think the cloud is a catalyst for small business growth.
The survey of more than 1,000 American adults was conducted in August 2012 by Wakefield Research and shows that while the cloud is widely used, it is still misunderstood. For example, 51 percent of respondents, including a majority of Millennials, believe stormy weather can interfere with cloud computing. Nearly one third see the cloud as a thing of the future, yet 97 percent are actually using cloud services today via online shopping, banking, social networking and file sharing. Despite this confusion, three in five (59 percent) believe the ?workplace of the future? will exist entirely in the cloud, which indicates people feel it?s time to figure out the cloud or risk being left behind in their professional lives.
These survey responses show there is a significant disconnect between what Americans know, what they pretend to know, and what they actually do when it comes to cloud computing. Among the key findings:
People feign knowledge about the cloud: One in five Americans (22 percent) admit that they?ve pretended to know what the cloud is or how it works. Some of the false claims take place during work hours, with one third of these respondents faking an understanding of the cloud in the office and another 14 percent doing so during a job interview. Interestingly, an additional 17 percent have pretended to know what the cloud was during a first date. Younger Americans are most likely to pretend to know what the cloud is and how it works (36 percent ages 18-29, 18% ages 30 and older), as are Americans in the West (28 percent West, 22 percent U.S.)
You?re not alone: While many admit they don?t understand the cloud, 56 percent of respondents say they think other people refer to cloud computing in conversation when they really don?t know what they are talking about.
What is it, anyway?: When asked what ?the cloud? is, a majority responded it?s either an actual cloud (specifically a ?fluffy white thing?), the sky or something related to the weather (29 percent). Only 16 percent said they think of a computer network to store, access and share data from Internet-connected devices. Some of the other verbatim responses include:
Many use it, few understand it: A majority of Americans (54 percent) claim to never use cloud computing. However, 95 percent of this group actually does use the cloud. Specifically, 65 percent bank online, 63 percent shop online, 58 percent use social networking sites such as Facebook or Twitter, 45 percent have played online games, 29 percent store photos online, 22 percent store music or videos online, and 19 percent use online file-sharing. All of these services are cloud based. Even when people don?t think they?re using the cloud, they really are.
Can the cloud save the economy?: Even though many Americans don?t know exactly what the cloud does, they see its silver lining. Most Americans (68 percent) recognize the economic benefits after learning more about the cloud. The most recognized benefits are that the cloud helps consumers by lowering costs (35 percent), spurs small business growth (32 percent) and boosts customer engagement for businesses (35 percent). Millennials are most likely to believe that the cloud generates jobs (26 percent Millennials, 19 percent Boomers).
Softer advantages, like working from home in the buff: People offered additional, unexpected benefits of the cloud, including the ability to access work information from home in their ?birthday suit? (40 percent); tanning on the beach and accessing computer files at the same time (33 percent); keeping embarrassing videos off of their personal hard drive (25 percent); and sharing information with people they?d rather not interact with in person (35 percent).
Concerns include cost, security, privacy: Despite these advantages, Americans still have reasons why they limit their use of cloud computing or avoid it entirely. Among those who hardly ever or never use the cloud, the top three deterrents are cost (34 percent), security concerns (32 percent) and privacy concerns (31 percent).
?This survey clearly shows that the cloud phenomenon is taking root in our mainstream culture, yet there is still a wide gap between the perceptions and realities of cloud computing,? said Kim DeCarlis, vice president of corporate marketing at Citrix. ?While significant market changes like this take time, the transition from the PC era to the cloud era is happening at a remarkable pace. The most important takeaway from this survey is that the cloud is viewed favorably by the majority of Americans, and when people learn more about the cloud they understand it can vastly improve the balance between their work and personal lives.?
Methodological Notes:
The Citrix Cloud Survey was conducted by Wakefield Research (www.wakefieldresearch.com) among 1,006 nationally representative American adults ages 18 and older, between Aug. 2-7, 2012, using an email invitation and an online survey. Quotas have been set to ensure reliable and accurate representation of the U.S. adult population 18 and older.
Results of any sample are subject to sampling variation. The magnitude of the variation is measurable and is affected by the number of interviews and the level of the percentages expressing the results. For the interviews conducted in this particular study, the chances are 95 in 100 that a survey result does not vary, plus or minus, by more than 3.1 percentage points from the result that would be obtained if interviews had been conducted with all persons in the universe represented by the sample.
Complete survey results and graphics are available.

The Canon EF-S 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM ($549.99 direct) ?is one of only two lenses from Canon that use STM focusing motors, the other being the EF 40mm f/2.8 STM . When paired with the new EOS Rebel T4i D-SLR these lenses provide smooth, silent autofocus during video recording. If bought in a kit along with the camera, you'll save a full $200 off of its retail price, but if you aren't a video shooter and are considering an 18-135mm purchase on its own, the older EF-S 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS ?is a bit sharper, albeit slightly larger, lens.
It measures 3.8 by 3.1 inches (HD) and weighs just over a pound, which is fairly typical for an 18-135mm design. It's at its shortest at 18mm, and the barrel extends as you zoom. The front element doesn't rotate when zooming or focusing, so using a 67mm circular polarizer is no problem.
I used Imatest to check the sharpness and distortion characteristics of the lens when paired with the EOS Rebel T4i . At 18mm f/3.5 it records an excellent 1,956 lines per picture height, which increases to 2,238 lines at f/5.6. Distortion is an issue at this focal length, as the lens shows 3.5 percent barrel distortion, which will make straight lines appear curved, especially when shooting an object that is close to the lens.
Sharpness dips below the 1,800-line threshold for a sharp photo at 50mm. It hits 1,698 lines at 50mm f/5, but does a much better job at f/8, where it records 2,139 lines. You'll get about 1,892 lines at 135mm f/5.6, and stopping down to f/8 there increases the score to 2,071 lines. At both 50mm and 135mm the lens shows 1.5 percent pincushion distortion, which can be noticeable in certain conditions. Some distortion is to be expected in a zoom lens, especially one that covers a long 7.5x range.
If you're buying a T4i, the 18-135mm STM lens is the way to go. Sure, the kit is a bit more costly than the one that is bundled with the EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS II, but the longer zoom range and silent STM motor justify the cost. If you're simply looking for a nicer zoom lens for an existing D-SLR, opting for the older EF-S 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS lens?notice that there's no STM designation for that one?will save you about $50 and give you a sharper image at the midpoint of the zoom range, but you may find yourself missing the STM motor if you later upgrade to a body that supports it.

The backup quarterback market started rolling with Tarvaris Jackson moving from Seattle to Buffalo, but the other name everyone expected in that mix might not be going anywhere.
Browns coach Pat Shurmur praised Colt McCoy extensively Sunday, creating the impression he wants to keep McCoy as his backup.
?I think he?s done an outstanding job here in training camp,? Shurmur said, via Mary Kay Cabot of the Cleveland Plain Dealer. ?I?m very pleased with where he?s at. I gained an even greater appreciation of him, the way he?s competed, the way he?s handled the situation, let?s just call it that. I?m very impressed with how he?s doing.
?I think that?s good for our team. He understands one of the primary things you need to understand as a backup at this point ??to be ready to play ? because you?re ankle injury from being in there, and he?s been on both sides of that coin and so he understands it.?
McCoy posted a 138.0 rating working with the second offense against the Eagles, and his preseason rating?s an impressive 119.1.?He?s looked good in the preseason before, but Shurmur said he?s impressed with how McCoy?s handled things.
?He?s had a full year now ? a season and a full offseason to get to know our system better and I think it?s showing up that way,? Shurmur said. ?So I?ve got a great deal of respect for what he?s done.?
Shurmur?s also said Thad Lewis as a player ?worth developing,? creating the obvious speculation that there?s one job for either Seneca Wallace or McCoy.
McCoy would have more value to another team, but if you take Shurmur at face value (and this time of year, you most definitely should not with any coach), he might be staying put.

Tell us about your salvation experience.
When I was about six my parents ?got saved? and it completely changed our lives. We lived every moment for Jesus and were on fire like nothing I?ve seen since. I accepted Jesus into my heart at that young age, evangelized at my elementary school and grew in the Lord throughout my childhood. Of course, over the years, I have rededicated myself to God as I matured and understood better what I was committing to. I guess you could say I?ve been a Christian all my life with some occasional back sliding experiences along the way.
You?re planning a writing retreat where you can only have four other authors. Who would they be and why?Laura Kinsale ? Her writing is amazing and I would love to talk and work with her.
Julie Lessman ? She?s so wonderful! I would love to hang out with her!
Laura Franz ? Such a sweet spirit in that girl and a talented writer to boot.
MaryLu Tyndale ? She really has a spiritual depth that I enjoy. I could have long conversations with her for sure.
Do you have a speaking ministry? If so, tell us about that.I?ve always thought it odd that people think that just because you can write you should be able to speak. I?m terrified of public speaking! I do enjoy small group discussions though and love to visit book groups and library groups.
What is the most embarrassing thing that has happened to you and how did you handle it?Ha! So many!! Let?s go back to the last question for this story. I was at an ICRS Conference in Denver and was asked to speak at the ?Heart of an Author? luncheon. The emcee was none other than Karen Kingsbury! I had prepared my seven minute speech to within an inch of my life and thought I could get through it. Well, somehow Karen received an older copy of my bio and when introducing me she basically said everything I was going to say in my speech. My mind went blank with terror. What was I going to say now? I couldn?t take my eyes off the big countdown clock staring at me with 7:00 minutes on it. I stood, shaking from head to toe, and proceeded to spew out a bunch of information about how I got published (breaking into tears 2-3 times while talking). It was a total blackout moment. I have no idea what I said! Thankfully, my sister was in the back of the room motioning for me to leave as soon as I finished. We had to hurry because we had a flight to catch so I didn?t have to go back to my table and sit there, mortified, after my train wreak of a speech. (I?ll bet everyone remembered me though ? I didn?t see anyone yawning ? lol!) I hightailed it outta there and vowed my speech days were over!!!
People are always telling me that they?d like to write a book someday. I?m sure they do to you, too. What would you tell someone who came up to you and said that?Go for it! Finish that book! Now is a great time to write a book with so many publishing options. There is no reason not to try if it is really in your heart to do so.
Tell us about the featured book.A Duke?s Promise is the third book in the Forgotten Castles series. Because it is a continuous series (Yes, you should read them in order to get the most out of the story) I can?t give too much away so here is the back of the book blurb:
From theChapter One
The silken curtains around the bed fluttered from the summer breeze that blew through the open windows of the duke?s bedchamber on number 31 St. James Square. Candlelight flickered across the room, a place she had only passed by while living here with him, peeking inside, wondering at the depths of his private chambers. The light of the candles made wavy shadows against the creamy paneled walls and
Alex tried to look anywhere but at the bed, and yet she couldn?t tear her gaze from it?the royal blue counterpane trimmed in gold, the massive four posts of carved wood draped with dark curtains, the piles of pillows. She swallowed against the knot in her throat and turned, lifting her arms and following the nudges of the maid.
?Great heavens, Your Grace, sit down before you faint. You?re as white as a ghost, you are.?
Alex obeyed, relieved to sit and rest her wobbly knees. She stared in the mirror at her reflection and watched as Clarissa took out the spiderweb-thin, diamond tiara from her hair, which Gabriel?s mother had given her as a wedding gift, and brushed out Alex?s long, dark hair. A suspended feeling of dread and terror surrounded her.
He would come in at any moment.
He would come in and find out about everything.

Since 1977 Cura?ao has its national press day on the 1st of September. The original proclamation indicates very clearly that this day is to put emphasis on the role of the media, freedom of expression and to reflect upon it. A yearly assessment of mass communication experienced by its members and society it serves.
This written commitment during
its 35 years of existence to raise awareness amongst all media members, government, corporate
and social sector and the public in general hasn?t ripened yet. The 25 radio stations, 9 newspapers, 2 weeklies, 3 tv stations have various challenges to confront outside but foremostly inside their own outlets. Media patrons didn?t start out with
the noble intention to enlighten their communities by seeking truth and publishing it in all thoroughness
and purity. According to them its a business and in 2012 there?s little space for constant accurate fair reporting media which brings forth social change. Reporters, journalists, talk show hosts all of them blur
reality with their social-corporate and political affiliated views. Newspapers with bloody frontpages, radio news hours filled with bickering mud-slinging politicians or sensational
tv news bulletins are products of underpaid journalists, reporters without trade union representation trying to serve the public while enduring unfavorable working conditions. All these factors indicate how the media led by its owners
and their business interests have shaped a mediocre atmosphere full
of self-censureship.
Last year press day was like the previous ones, plagued by the fear
of analyzing their own flaws in the same manner they would examine and criticize their daily news subjects. Just a big happy family reunion day. No panel discussions on self-regulation. No debates on a code of ethics. No conference about the necessity of a Media Ombudsman, media ownership law or a modernized media policy improving their below average standards. Realization of secondary schools with journalism, media classes should be a prime
topic. Alternative economic models
to guarantee a genuine Cura?ao independent media with decent wages, insurance and pension plans should be discussed.
The embodiment of self-ridicule is evident when in the recent past
press members allowed the biggest Cura?aoan bank Maduro & Curiel to pamper them on their day with a trip on a 18th century sailing ship in the bay of Santa Anna. Or accepting Blackberry?s from Digicel as a gift. These are subtle mediatic bribes preventing the media to report critically about the financial and commercial sector in a balanced manner which for decades led the public astray from financial literacy
in order to critically judge the performance of powerful financial institutions and consequently create
a catalyst for financial change.
The decay of the media comes in many forms. A newspaper which daily bread consists of court cases, crime acts and car accidents is a mal-nutrient for their specific lower, working-class target group mentally and spiritually. Politically biased radio talk and morning news shows manipulate their listeners by framing their daily programs according to the interests they serve.
Whether its tv, radio or print the root of the problem stays the same if you raise an audience without daily social, economical, financial, educational, cultural, spiritual programming. Politics from 7 am till 9 am. Politics from 10 am till 12pm. Politics from 12 pm till 2 pm. Politics from 3 pm till 5 pm. Politics from 5 pm till 9 pm.
That?s how you deliberately politically zombify a nation. Being hoodwinked on a daily basis by these media barons will never contribute fully to shape critical analytical citizens.
Demissionary prime minister Gerrit Schotte labeled the non stop criticism and incessantly political agenda setting media the overlords of a ?mediacracy? of course which he utilized without complaints before he became head of the new government. Some media personalities downplayed the existence of government by the media influenced by the powers that be. The undeniable fact is that a great amount of news is presented with minor content, sketching an image entertaining the audience with a pre-fabricated reality. A periodically media research should be a priority to determine the current state of the media, its performance, the various degrees of agenda setting culture connected to a valuable info credit rating for the public to select their reliable media of preference.
The few dissent media voices much needed to be heard have always blamed their own colleagues
including themselves that the
media is the main cause of most problems in our society. The continuous prominent featuring of non-issues to distract the audience
is a well known dumbing down strategy. A moratorium on this downward spiraled newsgathering form should have been enforced simultaneously with the birth of Cura?ao?s 10-10-10 country status.
People are starting to realize that low value news editions are caused by artificial cutthroat competition and media mergers could form one big solid cost effective company with high quality news. To crystalize this you would need uniformity of thoughts and actions perhaps a top priority for the recently nascent Cura?ao Media Foundation guided by veteran Extra photographer Stanley Ignacio to reestablish trust and loyalty to ethics within the media landscape.
Disrael Orphelin a communication expert explained the journalism integrity crisis as the following:
The moment more media outlets established through uncontrolled issueing of permits by befriended governments was the moment that director Orlando Cuales from Z86 a pioneering radio station felt its luxury life endangered and switched their ethics code.
Once a promoter of freedom of speech Z86 professionalized the tradition to censure certain sociopolitical leaders. Resulting into a new generation of ?yes men? journalists to survive and run a commercial media company. News coverage started losing more of its purity and that?s why Helmin Wiels from the independence party Pueblo Soberano copied a bottom up grassroots approach from his ex leader Nelson Pierre to create his own niche of unrestricted critical political theory news in a working class tongue. A gap in the market that he?s been filling for almost a decade.
Media, corporate world, union, religious players and politicians have all invoked demagoguery to gain an audience. So you would need fact-checking instruments, media watch advocates and programs to bring back and keep their integrity at a high level.
Dutch colonial rule also has left its psychosomatic mark on the media. Every time an issue presents between the Curacao and Dutch government you will have our minister giving his/her side to the story but 99.9% a journalist working for a Papiamentu speaking media will not pick up the phone and do an interview with a Dutch minister or press officer to clarify the situation.
Or when there?s a press conference, timidity among journalists prevents them from getting satisfactory answers on the issue in focus.
And every week there will be a ?problem? between Curacao and the Netherlands so the question arises if its fear of proper Dutch language dominance or a post-traumatic slavery disorder that affects most media members (Dutch + Papiamentu) to take an assertive stance and demand declarations on concerning issues from the Dutch?
Numerous times Papiamentu media is inclined to leave taboo covered topics or politically sensitive cases to the Dutch media. (Locally financed and the Dutch public financed) A great deal of sociopolitical issues will reflect a melange of Dutch and ?Krioyo? pro Dutch power elite interests the strong ties censures the exposure of their wrongdoings. The relationship between Curacao and Netherlands is narrated as a modern pre-emancipation plantation novel. Nurturing and conserving a predominantly pro neo-colonial conscience veiled by cultural paraphernalia as a front to claim Curacaoan identity. The Dutch media never familiarized themselves with methodical decolonization news coverage undermining the mental transformation of their demographics, the middle and upper class Curacaoans. Fully supporting and consolidating the underdevelopment of Papiamentu media by their everlasting Dutch paternalistic media presence is a cloaked form of media colonialism. A full circle problem.
An other side-effect of Dutch colonialism is how we in the past have isolated ourselves from the region. Local media barons never shown any interests to inform the public what?s happening through out the Caribbean, Latin America and the U.S. Its this neo-colonial arrogance that limits our vision our opportunities to connect on all levels. At times the media makes people think Curacao is an island next to Holland in Europe.
Last October the first media, communication, journalism studies supposed to start but just like last year it got cancelled due to lack of interest. This year there has not even been attempts to try it. Media patrons are not interested in having newsrooms with academically trained journalists. Corporate, governmental entities and above all the good governance demanding Dutch government never took an active
role in creating an independent education journalism institute.
This hybrid hypocrisy is the main cause of this organizational media brouhaha.
Journalists should get out of their
ivory towers and learn from Bonaire. Mr. Boi Antoin chief editor for EXTRA newspaper a self-made journalist decided to pass over his knowledge
of the truth telling trade to those interested on our sister island.
Giving free journalism classes as
he sees the need of having a new generation of journalists to strengthen the quality of independent media culture.
Social media still hasn?t forced its breakthrough in mainstream media.
A media outlet will use a blog, BBM, Facebook or Twitter updates only if it fits their political, corporate agenda. Most of the time they are purposely blocking the development of social media reports. Because of its rapidly high aware making activity and its
raw unfiltered content it will remain
a threat to the established media
and therefore daily consulted, but isolated and censured.
The revitalization of a truthful media seems a losing battle unless practitioners abandon the hyper-ignorance, take up the challenge to distance themselves from the institutionalized malice news coverage machinery. May this critique be a step towards a new era of informing our communities.

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - Jason Heyward credits the crowd as much as anything for his success in San Francisco.
Heyward hit a three-run homer and Mike Minor won for the first time in five starts as the Atlanta Braves beat the Giants 7-3 on Saturday, ending San Francisco's five-game winning streak.
"The crowd always keeps you on your toes here and it's a good environment to play in," Heyward said. "They're always here, it's a good team and they have good pitching, so you have to focus every at-bat."
Heyward became the first left-handed hitter to take Madison Bumgarner deep in two years. The slugger has five home runs and 11 RBIs at the Giants' waterfront ballpark.
"I'm just looking for strikes to hit," Heyward said. "Don't miss the one you get to hit because if you do, he's got you."
Michael Bourn had two hits and drove in two runs for the Braves, who had lost six of seven but still lead the NL wild-card race. Reed Johnson and Martin Prado also knocked in runs.
Minor (7-10) gave up three runs and four hits in 6 2-3 innings, striking out five and walking none. He also doubled, walked and scored twice.
"I was just trying to get guys out and limit the damage," he said. "I felt good. It's not about being fatigued or anything like that."
Pinch-hitter Gregor Blanco had a two-run double for the NL West-leading Giants, who had won eight of 10.
Bumgarner (14-8) allowed four runs and seven hits over 6 1-3 innings. He matched his season high with four walks and struck out five, losing for only the second time at home.
"He's been so good all year and I thought he still pitched a pretty good game," Giants manager Bruce Bochy said. "He made one mistake and it went for a three-run homer."
Bumgarner walked Minor and Prado around a strikeout of Bourn in the third. Heyward smacked a home run into the right-field bleachers to put the Braves ahead 3-0.
"I kind of got out of whack there," Bumgarner said. "It was a fastball up and over the middle of the plate."
Hunter Pence was hit by a pitch leading off the fifth and scored on Brandon Belt's groundout to make it 3-1.
Bourn singled home a run in the seventh to make it 4-1.
"We had a good approach," Braves manager Fredi Gonzalez said. "I was ecstatic about Minor's performance. He minimized the damage and was dominant."
Blanco doubled off Chad Durbin to drive in two runs in the seventh.
Bourn and Prado each walked with the bases loaded against Jeremy Affeldt to force in runs in the eighth. Johnson doubled home a run in the ninth.
"It got a little sloppy there and we let the game get away," Bochy said.
