MILAN (AP) ? Americans Brian De Palma and Terrence Malick are among 17 directors competing for the top prize at this year's Venice Film Festival, a lean selection compared with recent editions.

Film festival director Alberto Barbera announced the official selection of films that will compete for the coveted Golden Lion during the 69th edition running from Aug. 29 to Sept. 8.

Both De Palma's sexy thriller "Passion" and Malick's romantic film "To The Wonder" star actress Rachel McAdams. It is De Palma's first feature film since "Redacted," which won Venice's award for best direction in 2007.

Four U.S. directors are vying for the top prize, along with three Italians. Otherwise, the broad field includes films from France, Japan, South Korea and the Philippines.

Recent editions have seen more than 20 films in competition.

Second quarter adjusted operating profit was $1,263.4 million, up 3% year over year. Quarterly adjusted operating margin was 41.1% compared with 40.2% in the year-ago quarter. In the reported quarter, the company repurchased 9.6 million of its Class-B non-voting shares for a total consideration of $350 million and paid dividend totaling $207 million.

During the second quarter of 2012, Rogers Communications generated $1,068.3 million of cash from operations compared with $911 million in the year-ago quarter. Free cash flow during the reported quarter was $615 million compared with $400 million in the year-ago quarter.

At the end of the second quarter of 2012, Rogers Communications had $1,639 million of cash and marketable securities on its balance sheet compared with $1,107 million at the end of 2011. Total outstanding debt, at the end of the reported quarter, was $10,778 million compared with $9,833 million at the end of 2011. At the end of the second quarter of 2012, debt-to-capitalization ratio was 0.75 compared with 0.74 at the end of 2011.

Quarterly total revenue was $1,748 million, up 0.3% year over year. Network revenue was $1,636 million, up 1% year over year. Equipment sales were $112 million, down 7% year over year. For Elderly, Poor Sleep Linked With Placement In Nursing Home

On top of an increased risk of diabetes, weight gain and stroke, researchers have found another thing linked with poor sleep -- being placed in a nursing home.

In a new Journal of the American Geriatrics Society study, elderly women who experienced the most fragmented sleep had a three-fold risk of being placed in a nursing home five years later. Similarly, those who spent the least time actually sleeping after first falling asleep had a three-fold risk of being placed in a nursing home later on, researchers found.

"Despite the growing literature on sleep disturbance and disability, prior to our research very little was known about the association between sleep disturbance in older adults and risk of placement in long-term care facilities," study researcher Dr. Kristine Yaffe, M.D., a professor at the University of California, San Francisco, said in a statement.

The study included 1,664 women with an average age of 83. The researchers gauged their sleep patterns using wrist actigraphy for four nights. They found that, on average, everyone slept an average of 408 minutes (6.8 hours).

Five years later, researchers followed up with the study participants to find that 71 of them (4 percent) were in a nursing home, while 127 (8 percent) were in a personal care home.

Even though researchers found that fragmented sleep and trouble staying asleep were linked with the increased risk of being placed in a nursing home, they did not find any link between the amount of time they stayed asleep and being placed in a nursing home.

'Just too close to home': Aurora, Colo., mourns

The family had planned to go to a movie at another theater to get their minds off the tragedy but found it closed because one of the shooting victims had worked there so they saw it as a sign to visit the memorial and leave one balloon for each victim.

AURORA, Colo. -- Twelve candles, a birthday card and flowers placed in popcorn boxes.

Mourners created a makeshift memorial Saturday across the street from a movie theater where 12 people were killed and dozens injured in an attack, with some shedding tears and sharing embraces as they grappled to understand the deadly assault on their community.

A birthday card with a photo of victim Alex Sullivan stood amid the stuffed animals and balloons. ?Gone not forgotten,? read one poster. A group held hands in a circle and said a prayer, and a girl placed 12 red heart-shaped balloons at the empty lot.

?Our heart goes out to everybody. We grew up in the community here and it?s in our backyard. It?s just too close to home,? Shawn Quintana, 40, whose sister lit 12 white candles for the victims, told NBC News.

The memorial appeared a day after James Holmes allegedly attacked the theater after Friday midnight with four weapons and tear gas, killing 12 people and leaving 58 injured.

Terry Jackson, 50, his wife, Donna, 58, and their 20-year-old son brought a bouquet of yellow and white flowers to pay their respects. Terry said he felt ?very angry? about what had happened.

?I?d like to say that I felt peace in my life but I don?t,? he said, elaborating that he was ?just angry that somebody could come in and be this evil and cause this much devastation.?

?Strangers who?ve never met each other ever in life are now ? coming out to pay our respects and it?s helping me keep my composure for my buddy with a lot of people being here,? he said. But ?not being able to see him ever again is going to be kind of hard, it?s going to be really hard.?

Bradshaw said she knew their community would change after the attack. ?We just hope for the best,? she said.

?It took the innocence of going to a movie away,? she added. ?It would take a lot to get me to (go) back to a theater.?

WASHINGTON (AP) ? President Barack Obama and Republican challenger Mitt Romney both have softened their positions on gun restrictions over the years. As they expressed shock and sorrow over the bloodshed at a Colorado movie theater, neither suggested that tougher gun control could make a difference, a notion that has faded from political debate.

Romney signed a ban on assault weapons as Massachusetts governor. But as the presumptive Republican nominee, he now bills himself as the candidate who will protect gun owners' rights.

Obama called for reinstating the federal ban on assault weapons during his 2008 presidential campaign. But since his election, he hasn't sought to get that done or pushed other gun control proposals, either.

Neither man is likely to raise gun control as a campaign issue ? beyond Romney's insistence that an Obama presidency is bad for gun owners. Both say they'll protect the Second Amendment right to bear arms. A look at the evolution of the candidates' positions and where they stand on guns:

OBAMA

1997-2004: As an Illinois state senator, Obama supports banning all forms of semiautomatic weapons and tighter state restrictions generally on firearms, including a failed effort to limit handgun purchases to one per month.

2005: In the U.S. Senate, Obama votes against protecting firearms makers and dealers from lawsuits over misuse of their products by others. The bill is signed into law by President George W. Bush.

2008: During his first presidential campaign, Obama supports a return to the federal ban on assault weapons, which began during the Clinton administration and expired under Bush. He also endorses requiring background checks for buyers at gun shows. The National Rifle Association attacks him as an anti-gun zealot ? a stand the group continues to take today.

April 2008: Obama is criticized for elitism after sounding dismissive of gun owners in a talk to campaign donors. He said voters in struggling small towns in Middle America "cling to guns or religion or antipathy to people who aren't like them" to explain their frustrations.

September 2008: Obama seeks to reassure gun owners: "I believe in people's lawful right to bear arms. ... There are some common-sense gun safety laws that I believe in. But I am not going to take your guns away." Nonetheless, gun sales go up when Obama wins, apparently because of fear that new restrictions are imminent under his administration.

2009: As president, Obama signs a law allowing people to carry concealed weapons in the Grand Canyon, Yellowstone and other national parks and wildlife refuges and another that lets people carry guns in their checked bags on Amtrak trains.

2010: The Brady Center to Prevent Gun Violence gives Obama a grade of "F'' for failing to push even the gun restrictions he supported while campaigning.

2011: Obama says the shooting that severely wounded then-Rep. Gabriel Giffords, D-Ariz., and killed six people should lead to "a new discussion of how we can keep America safe for all our people." He calls for "sound and effective steps" to keep guns out of the hands of criminals, including strengthening background checks on gun buyers. But he's short on specifics, and the Obama administration hasn't proposed any new gun initiatives since then.

March 2012: Obama calls the fatal shooting of black teenager Trayvon Martin by a neighborhood watch volunteer in Florida "a tragedy," saying Americans should do some soul-searching and "examine the laws" to figure out why it happened. He hasn't called for any legal changes in response to the case, which mostly brought attention to some states' "stand your ground" laws making it easier for a shooter to claim self-defense. Indeed, most gun regulations are imposed by states. The primary federal law is the Brady law requiring background checks on firearms purchasers.

July 20: Obama says he's heartbroken by the Aurora, Colo., movie theater massacre and calls for Americans to unite in prayer for the victims: "If there's anything to take away from this tragedy it's the reminder that life is very fragile, our time here is limited and it is precious."

Asked whether the mass shooting should prompt a new review of gun laws, White House spokesman Jay Carney declines to comment beyond reiterating Obama's existing stance in support of "common-sense measures that protect Second Amendment rights of Americans, while ensuring that those who should not have guns under existing law do not get them."

The report, by an international team of experts, provided a boost for the disputed use of such ocean fertilisation for combating global warming. But it failed to answer questions over possible damage to marine life.

When dumped into the ocean, the iron can spur growth of tiny plants that carry heat-trapping carbon to the ocean floor when they die, the study said.

Scientists dumped seven tonnes of iron sulphate, a vital nutrient for marine plants, into the Southern Ocean in 2004. At least half of the heat-trapping carbon in the resulting bloom of diatoms, a type of algae, sank below 1,000 metres (3,300 ft).

"Iron-fertilised diatom blooms may sequester carbon for timescales of centuries in ocean bottom water and for longer in the sediments," the team from more than a dozen nations wrote in the journal Nature.

Burying carbon in the oceans would help the fight against climate change, caused by a build-up of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere that scientists say is raising temperatures and causing more floods, mudslides, droughts and higher sea levels.

The study was the first convincing evidence that carbon, absorbed by algae, can sink to the ocean bed. One doubt about ocean fertilisation has been whether the carbon stays in the upper ocean layers, where it can mix back into the air.

A dozen previous studies have shown that iron dust can help provoke blooms of algae but were inconclusive about whether it sank.

Large-scale experiments with ocean fertilisation using iron are currently banned by the international London Convention on dumping at sea because of fears about side-effects.

"Crying shame"

"I am hoping that these results will show how useful these experiments are," lead author Victor Smetacek of the Alfred Wegener Institute in Germany told Reuters.

"It's a crying shame, honestly," he said of the moratorium, which he said meant that even small-scale experiments were too complex and costly for researchers.

He said that ocean fertilisation should be overseen by the United Nations and should not be eligible for carbon credits under U.N. treaties. He said private companies should not be allowed to run experiments so that proper oversight can be ensured.

Ocean fertilisation is one of several suggested techniques for slowing climate change known as "geo-engineering". Other possibilities include reflecting sunlight with giant mirrors in space.

"Most scientists would agree that we are nowhere near the point of recommending ocean iron fertilisation as a geo-engineering tool," Ken Buessler of the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution in the United States wrote in a commentary in Nature.

But he added that many thought that bigger and longer experiments were needed to see if the technology worked.

"If the 50 percent figure for algal bloom biomass sinking to the deep ocean is correct then this represents a whole new ball game in terms of iron fertilisation as a geo-engineering technique," said Dave Reay, a senior lecturer in carbon management at the University of Edinburgh who was not involved in the study.

"Maybe such deliberate enhancement of carbon storage in the oceans has more legs than we thought but, as the authors acknowledge, it's still far too early to run with it," he said.

Smetacek said the publication had been delayed since 2004 partly because of problems in checking that the 150 square km (60 square miles) patch of ocean where the iron was dumped - an eddy in the Antarctic Circumpolar Current - had not mixed with waters outside.

The experts said that the input of iron was similar to that found after the melt of icebergs in the oceans - iron concentrations in coastal regions tend to be much higher.
