TAX-AN has Connection with Contractors that are working at Finance

Philipsburg:--- Minister of Finance Roland Tuitt confirmed on Wednesday during the Council of Ministers press briefing that the TAX-AN group does have connections with contractors that were working with the former Minister of Finance Hiro Shigemoto. SMN News has been reliably informed that the TAX-AN contract was awarded to Mrs. Judith Brewster while her sister Ruth Brewster is working for the Ministry of Finance. According to our sources, an investigation is now being conducted by SOAB to determine which of the two sisters was working as an adviser to the former Minister of Finance Hiro Shigemoto.
TAX-AN was awarded a contract on March 22nd to restructure the tax system on St. Maarten. On Monday, the Minister of Finance told Parliament that basic procedures to grant the contract were not followed and a biding was not conducted even though the restructuring would cost St. Maarten over ten million United States Dollars over a two year period. Minister Tuitt also said he stopped the payments that were due to TAX-AN while he is busy seeking legal advice on how to proceed.
Minister Tuitt said on Wednesday that he was advised by the legal experts to tread carefully when dealing with the matter. He said SOAB still has to provide him with an invoice as to how much it will cost St. Maarten to conduct a judicial investigation into the TAX-AN affair.
When asked by SMN News to further elaborate on the legal opinion he received on the TAX-AN affair since he already indicated to Parliament that proper procedures were not followed and if St. Maarten would be confronted with legal ramifications now that he has stopped the project. The Minister said when he gets the report from SOAB he will put it together with the legal advice which he said was much more specific and present it to the Council of Ministers, at that point they will decide collectively on how to "tread carefully."

Self-Help vs. Personal Development ? Ten Thousand Soapboxes

A week or so ago, Fey turned to me and asked what I considered a strange question. ?Are you reading a self-help book??

My instinctive response was, of course, I haven?t read self-help in an ice age. Of course, I gobble up ?personal development? books with startling frequency. The difference is between self-help and personal development is subtle but important.

Self-help books, as a rule, tend to offer a step-by-step plans for improving a specific area of your life. Quit Smoking in Three Weeks, Lose 5 Pounds Without Dieting, Ten-Day Power Boost for Your Career ? that sort of thing. Personal development books, from what I can tell, are a little more indepth. These books, which can range from philosophy to psychology to spirituality to social networking, nudge the reader out of the cookie-cutter solution mentality towards a more self-directed path.

My actual answer was, ?No, I?m not reading anything at the moment.?

To which my insightful wife just nodded and said, ?Yeah, I can tell.?

The moral of this little anecdote is this: When Debbie doesn?t work actively on her self-development, she tends to fall into a negative funk that is clear to those who love and know her.

The Process of Personal Development

The urge to self-examine is very strong in most people. We love quizzes, from Cosmo quizzes to personality profiles, we can?t get enough of them. But personal development goes far beyond ?Which Harry Potter Character Will You Marry?? Personal development requires that you take a deep look at yourself, both good and bad, discover your truth, and then find a way to live that truth in a positive and productive way.

For years, I read pretty much anything I could get my hands on in hopes that I would stumble on to the key to happiness. I was looking for a silver bullet, that tested and true ten-point plan that would make me Rich, Beautiful, and Famous (as well as Stoopid Happy and Worshipped as a Benevolent Goddess).

Poor authors! Who on Earth can fill that order?

Eventually though, I gave up looking for quick fixes and just started reading about personality and life and living. Not because I thought it would help, but because I found it fascinating. And over the years, I?ve come up with quite a list of recommendations.

Right now, I?m reading Debbie Ford?s?The Dark Side of the Light Chasers: Reclaiming Your Power, Brilliance, Creativity and Dreams. To be honest, I?ve been avoiding this book for years. Not that I thought it was bad, but because I knew that I couldn?t just read the book. I would have to do the exercises, and I was never ready to face my shadow side. I don?t know if I?m able to do so yet, but I?m going to give it a go.

It took a lot to get me here. Like so many people, I don?t want to have a dark side. I don?t want to have needs and issues and bad habits and petty moments. But something Ford said in an early chapter really resonated with me: you have to find the gift in the shadow. If you?re a bitch, find the gift in being a bitch. (A bitch will stand up for herself when someone tries to take advantage. A bitch will not let herself get pushed to the side and ignored when she deserves to be heard.) If you?re judgmental, find the gift in being judgmental. (For example, a judgmental person knows what matters to them and is not afraid to insist on it. A judgmental person will spot a line of bullshit long before a non-judgmental person might.)

So, I?m going there. I am not sure what I?m going to find when I pull up the curtains and look in the shadows of my psyche. But I?m going there.

A Wealth of Opportunity

I mentioned a little earlier that I had some recommendations for great personal development writers. Before I close, I?m going to share with you some writers whose books have really changed my perspectives on life.

* Jean Shinoda-Bolen: When I first read Goddesses in Everywoman back in the 1990s, it was completely new to me. Shinoda-Bolen, a wise crone of the personal development movement, used the Hellenic goddesses as templates for Jungian personality interpretation. Through the eyes of Hera, Athena, Aphrodite, Demeter, Hestia, and Persephone, I found a new understanding of myself and other women. It still holds up as a break-through work and I recommend it to anyone who is interested.

* Clarissa Pinkola-Estes: It took me a couple of times to get through Pinkola-Estes? ground-breaking book Women Who Run with the Wolves. Not because the book was uninteresting or irrelevant. The exact opposite ? the book is so rich and dense with meaning that my poor Gemini brain could not go too far without needing a digestion break, preferably in the shallows. Her storytelling is exquisite, her insights are remarkable. Read it slowly, wrapped in a blanket on a cold night. It will change you.

* Brenda Ueland: Many, many years ago I read Ueland?s book If You Want to Write, and it humbled me. Back then, the thought of writing non-fiction, personal non-fiction, was so far beyond me that her book actually frightened me. But as a treatise on the hows and whys of a full life, even if you are?t a writer, Ueland?s work is unsurpassed. Her wisdom and spirit are inspiring to anyone wanting to live a purposeful and creative life. (Now, I look back and thank the goddess that Ueland penned this masterpiece before her death. It is even more relevant now than ever.)

*Anne Lamott: My dear friend Monique sent me a used copy of Bird by Bird a year or so ago as a surprise. I was unfamiliar with Lamott?s work, but trusted Monique not to steer me wrong. Bird by Bird is the kind of book that promotes living authentically and passionately. Her prose is eloquent, her stories insightful, and her advise golden. Definitely read this book if you get a chance.

*Michael Neill: Michael Neill is a practitioner of NLP (Neuro-Linguistic Programming), a form of therapy that emphasizes the connection between thoughts and the quality of life. His books are funny, smart, and contain many practical tools you can use to decrease stress and give yourself the courage to follow your dreams. He?s a little more self-helpy than the other authors, but he?s just so darned good at what he does, ya gotta love him.

*Steve Pavlina: Another estrogen-challenged member of my rec list, Pavlina is a self-made personal development guru. His website is enormous?the guy is hugely prolific and has a great deal of free content on a variety of subjects from raising consciousness to becoming your own boss. He can be a bit abrasive, especially if you are of the religious ilk, but the value far exceeds the annoyance you might feel at some of his more provocative posts.

* Abraham-Hicks: Esther Hicks, an impish woman originally from Tennessee, channels a group-being identified as ?Abraham.? While their message is pretty tight (and Abraham/Esther is meticulously on-message, regardless of what questions are thrown her way), it?s a good primer for anyone wanting to learn more about the Law of Attraction. What their writings lack in diversity (yeah, Abraham, I know. Connect with Source energy?tune in, tap in and turn on or whatever), they more than make up for in charm and engagement. It?s hard not to like Abraham/Esther, and the message is positive. I know that Fey and I got a lot of benefit from their teachings, even if we are not 100% on board the Abraham-Hicks bandwagon.

* Thomas Moore: No, I?m not talking about the historical Thomas Moore. I?m talking about the modern-day author, psychologist, musician, blogger, spiritual seeker. His books on the soul and soulfulness are poetic and profound, bringing a lyrical quality to an often cut-and-dry field. His works are a must-read for anyone wanting to merge spirituality and soul into their daily lives.

So, these are a few of the authors I?d recommend. There are many more, of course, and I may blog on this subject again. I?d like to ask my readers for their recommendations, as I am always interested in expanding my knowledge. Who are you reading? Where do you turn for wisdom and advise? I look forward to hearing from you.

Jordan Schultz: Celtics-Heat: Boston Wins Game 5 With Paul Pierce Dagger

Paul Pierce did it again, ladies and gentleman. In a series full of young superstars, Pierce -- as he has throughout his entire career in Boston -- provided yet another dagger in the biggest of playoff games. The 2008 Finals MVP connected on a near impossible three-pointer over the outstretched arms of LeBron James to give the Celtics a 90-86 lead with under 60 seconds remaining, ultimately propelling a 94-90 victory over Miami in Game 5.

In what was supposed to be Miami's turn to regain control of this series in South Beach, it was Pierce and fellow veteran Kevin Garnett who led the charge. KG, all of 36 years old, finished with 26 points and 11 rebounds. Rajon Rondo meanwhile, Boston's engine who played flawlessly through the first four games of this series, struggled to connect on his darting drives to the hoop. And once again, it wasn't Rondo's field goal percentage that mattered so much as his remarkable ability to control tempo and create secondary offense for a Celtics team that has struggled to score in the half-court all season long.

Akin to Game 4, Boston's best offense in Game 5 often came in the form of Rondo prodding his way into the paint when classic transition opportunities didn't present itself. Pierce and Garnett benefitted greatly, essentially able to establish rhythm and balance without Miami's normally stellar defense able to establish itself in the paint. Further, Rondo's timely tip-out to Mickael Pietrus in the right corner for a three-pointer off a Wade block with six minutes left helped keep the Celtics in the game when it seemed Miami may have turned a corner.

"I thought that play was absolutely sensational," head coach Doc Rivers said after the game. "I thought that was maybe the biggest play of the game."

As for the Heat, Tuesday's loss forces it to win two straight games, including a Game 6 in Boston. One thing is for sure: the electric offense the Heat displayed in Games 1 and 2 has completely evaporated and head coach Erik Spoelstra will surely be searching for answers. Perhaps he can rely more on Chris Bosh, who played just 12 minutes in his return from a knee injury. Or perhaps he can get 40 from Dwyane Wade or James, but he will likely have to do so with better ball movement. Rivers employed both zone and man defenses along with switching men to confuse a Heat team that -- even when clicking on all cylinders -- has always focused more on individual talent and isolation. The result was a 39 percent shooting effort from the floor and 27 percent performance from distance.

Either way we look at it though, this is now the Big 3's second consecutive season where it faces elimination against a far more experienced and far more intelligent team in a Game 6. This time however, it's not in the Finals and its not even at home.

Senior al-Qaida leader targeted in US drone strike that killed 15 in Pakistan

- / AFP/Getty Images file

Al-Qaida official Abu Yahya al-Libi, who escaped from U.S. custody in Afghanistan in 2005, is shown in a screen grab from an al-Qaida propaganda videotape released in July 2008.

By Robert WindremNBC News

A Predator attack over the weekend targeted Abu Yahya al-Libi, a leading al-Qaida operative who was viewed as one of five candidates to succeed Osama bin Laden as leader of the terrorist group when he was killed last year.? U.S. officials confirm that he was the target of the Sunday attacks and say they are awaiting word on his status.

In one of three strikes over the weekend, a U.S. drone struck a militant compound early Monday morning in North Waziristan, part of? Pakistan?s northwestern tribal area. Pakistan security reports indicated the pre-dawn strike killed 15 insurgents, but. U.S. officials said the number of dead was ?exaggerated.?

The Agence France Presse news agency reported that two missiles were fired on the compound in Mir Ali, 15 miles east of Miramshah, the capital of North Waziristan, near the Afghan border, in an area considered a hive of Taliban and al-Qaida activity.

A Pakistani official, ?who spoke with NBC News on condition of anonymity, said the victims were mostly foreigners and Urdu-speaking Punjabi Taliban who had gathered with the intention of crossing into Afghanistan to fight with Afghan Taliban fighters against NATO forces.

Reuters, citing reports from the region, said nearly 30 people were killed during the sequence of strikes, including four suspected militants on Saturday, 10 suspected militants on Sunday, and 15 people in the strike in which Abu Yahya was targeted.

Pakistan's Foreign Ministry said Monday it "strongly condemns" the US drone strikes, which it described as "illegal attacks" on Pakistani sovereignty.

The most-recent attack of the weekend was the eighth drone strike in Pakistan since a NATO conference on Afghanistan in Chicago last month. Since taking office in 2009, the Obama administration has carried out nearly 300 drone strikes in Pakistan, Yemen and Somalia, the majority of them in Pakistan?s tribal areas, according to the New America Foundation, which keeps an unofficial count.

If Abu Yahya was indeed killed, it would be another blow to al-Qaida in Pakistan, the so-called al-Qaida Central.? The Libyan, believed to be 39 years old, is one of the most influential propagandists in al-Qaida and one of its best known leaders.

Abu Yahya draws much of his credibility from having escaped a U.S. military prison at Bagram Air Base in Afghanistan on the night of July 10, 2005. He subsequently appeared in more than 30 videos produced by al Shahab, the al-Qaida media wing, and other militant sites. In December 2009, Pakistani officials erroneously reported he had been killed in a Predator strike, further enhancing his image.

U.S. officials say unlike many al-Qaida propagandists, Abu Yahya also is a seasoned fighter.

In May 2011, shortly after bin Laden was killed, U.S. officials identified Abu Yahya as one of five potential successors to the slain al-Qaida leaders.? The leading candidate, Ayman al Zawahiri, ultimately did succeed bin Laden.? If Abu Yahya was killed, he would be the fourth of the five to have been killed in drone strikes.

Ilyas Kashmiri, al-Qaida?s director of external operations, was killed on June 3. Abdul Rahman Atiya, bin Laden?s chief of staff, was killed Aug. 22. Both of those attacks took place in northwestern Pakistan.? Anwar al Awlaki, a leader of al-Qaida in the Arabian Peninsula and an American citizen, was killed in Yemen, also in a drone strike, on Sept. 30.?

Economist Arthur Rolnick Visits Boston ? - Eye on Early Education

BTWIC President Mary Reed and Arthur Rolnick (Photo courtesy of Bessie Tartt Wilson Initiative for Children)

Economist Arthur Rolnick ? who estimated a 16% return on investment for high-quality early education for children from low-income families ? was in town recently as the guest of the Bessie Tartt Wilson Initiative for Children. BTWIC has convened a working group of early education providers, academics and businesspeople to explore the possibility of establishing a sustainable fund for early education in Massachusetts. Rolnick, the former research director of the Federal Reserve Bank of Minneapolis, raised $20 million from Minnesota business leaders to create a scholarship fund for early education in St. Paul that he hopes to replicate statewide. He is also trying to create a permanent endowment for early education in Minnesota.

?Businesses throughout Massachusetts have given generously to K-12 schools to support a range of essential and enrichment programs. The efforts have helped many schools and many children, but the broad impact is difficult to track,? Rolnick and BTWIC President Mary Reed wrote in the Boston Business Journal. ?We suggest an alternative that can assist schools, but also fuel economic development. Invest private and public money where you?ll get the greatest and most traceable return on investment: a statewide Early Education Permanent Fund to provide each child in need with high-quality early childhood education programs.?

Rolnick, speaking at a BTWIC event at the State House, delivered a message similar to his keynote at a Thrive in 5 conference in Boston a year ago. In his remarks last week, Rolnick cited the economic evidence on the impact of high-quality early education that he and his colleague Rob Grunewald calculated in 2003, showing a 16% return on investment greater than 6% average annual rate of return from the stock market in the post-World War II era. While economist James Heckman, a Nobel Prize winner, estimates a somewhat lower rate of return, he, too, finds the return outpaces the stock market and has also become a strong advocate for high-quality early education. Rolnick also noted the work on the science of young children?s brain development of Dr. Jack Shonkoff, the pediatrician who heads the Center on the Developing Child at Harvard.

?Given the overwhelming evidence and given the challenge by Shonkoff, there?s this policy gap,? Rolnick said. ?Whatever you propose, you better start early.?

Senator Katherine Clark (D-Melrose, lead Senate sponsor of An Act Relative to Third Grade Reading Proficiency; Senator? Sal DiDomenico (D-Everett); Representative Alice Peisch (D-Wellesley), co-chair of the Legislature?s Joint Committee on Education; and Andre Mayer, senior vice president of Associated Industries of Massachusetts, all made welcoming remarks at the State House event.

Rolnick also met with BTWIC?s permanent fund task force and attended a business reception during his Boston visit.

Instapaper Finally Makes Its Android Debut, And It?s Almost Amazing

instagramdroidGiven Instapaper creator Marco Arment's less-than-enthusiastic stance on Android, it didn't seem like an Android version of his popular story-saving app would ever see the light of day. A handful of people have tried to bring the immensely useful service to Android with varying degrees of success, but Arment and mobile developer Mobelux have surprised us all by offering up their own official solution. Yes, that's right. Instapaper for Android has finally been released into the Google Play Store, where it can be yours for $2.99. Now the question changes from "when will it be released?" to "how well does this thing actually work?"

Flame Is No Stuxnet

Fanned by a security community hungry for the next Stuxnet, a new so-called superworm called "Flame" made headlines last week. Home School Education ? Setting Up a - Right Education

If you are planning to put your kids in home school, it is important that you learn some basics tips to help you prepare for homeschooling. Of course, it is important that you also can provide the best education and learning to your kid as well even if they are not going to school.

If you are planning to set up a home school education, which is one option for kids these days, here are some tips to help you.

Assess your schedule and your family?s schedule to be able to ensure that you have enough time to teach children. Of course, you have to make a schedule too and make sure that homeschooling has its own time that is set only for homeschooling. Set a desired schedule then but make sure that any household chores and other chores at home do not interfere with the kids? schooling.

Make your home school legal. In establishing your home school, it is indeed important that you have obtained proper licensing and that you also have set up the requirements for setting up a home school. You may need accreditation and you may have to put into writing the schedule, the classes, the outline of the curriculum as well as the number of hours that your homeschool allot for teaching and learning.

Determine your home school schedule that allows optimum learning from your child. Assess his attitude towards learning. If he is active in the morning, you may need to schedule your home school classes in the morning as well, but make sure that your child is still getting the total number of hours of lessons required of him.

Separate the child?s play area as well as their work area. Being organized can help a lot in making home schooling more convenient and easy. If you are home schooling a preschooler, it helps to also avoid disturbance at home especially if their friends are already playing or wanting to play with your homeschooled children.

Arrange off-site requirements for your homeschool. If you see the need to have other classes for your homeschooled child especially when it comes to their interests and passion such as music classes, dancing classes, swimming classes or any other lessons they will be taking, arrange the schedule early so you can also make the schedule fit in to yours as well.

Prepare their subject matters and make sure to check out the proper subject descriptions to ease of accreditation later when our homeschooled kid will eventually go to high school or college.

Of course, aside from these preparations, you will also need some paper works such as preparing professionally made transcripts that are acceptable to colleges and universities if you are having a high school home school. But of course, even with preschool, make sure that you have prepared the forms they will need for their records.

Concrete Sealing for your Home?

The rule is actually easy: if it?s concrete, it requires the simple task of concrete sealing. And not just your ordinary sealer ? if you want to maximize the durability and lifespan of the concrete structures in your home, what you will need is a water-based impregnating concrete sealer.

Alright, that?s actually a long word: water-based impregnating concrete sealer. You are not to be blamed if you cringe at the term, but you deserve blame if you won?t actually incorporate concrete sealers in your home?s maintenance procedures. Indeed, an important component of home improvement and maintenance is ensuring that the different structures in the house ? wooden, stone and metal ones ? are protected with sealants.

Now, one such type of sealant is the water-based impregnating concrete sealer. Seasoned homeowners would say that water-based impregnating sealers are perhaps the best deals when it comes to sealing concrete. An impregnating sealer is best for protecting concrete because of the sealant?s impregnating or penetrating capability, which allows it to reach beyond just the surface of the structure. And because it?s water-based, this type of concrete sealer is best for maintaining the concrete?s natural look. Yep, unlike the solvent-based concrete sealers, water-based sealers do not change the color of the concrete or the stone.

Ultimately, a water-based impregnating concrete sealer is one of the most preferred sealant among homeowners because of its cheapness and ?easy-to-apply and easy-to-strip-off? quality. And it actually offers a bonus point to the environmentally-conscious consumer: unlike the other type of concrete sealant, water-based are made to be natural and environment-friendly. Cool, isn?t it?

The Truth About Dave Ramsey's ?Truth About Bankruptcy? | Bret ...

A few weeks ago, I came across this article by Dave Ramsey. In case you don?t know, Mr. Ramsey is an author and radio personality who gives advice about financial matters. His programs may work for many people and he may have some good ideas about investing, but his ?Truth About Bankruptcy? article was off-base.

- Let?s start with his opening, ?Truth: Bankruptcy is a gut-wrenching, life-changing event that causes lifelong damage. [Y]ou know it?s a living nightmare. It can devastate your job, destroy your marriage and steal your peace of mind.?

Nearly all of my clients will tell you this simply wasn?t true for them. The marital stresses and gut-wrenching, painful experiences were the events that caused the financial troubles, the constant calls and threats from debt collectors, the financial ?experts? calling them failures and blaming them for their situation, or the waiting before finally seeking legal help. Bankruptcy lawyers help relieve those stressors and that pain, we don?t cause them.

I compare it to the emergency root canal I had during final exams in my first year of law school. The pain was unbearable, but the dentist relieved the pain with the root canal. It would have been great if I hadn?t needed the root canal in the first place, but it was the best solution for relieving the pain. Same with bankruptcy. It would be great if no one found themselves in terrible financial straits, but bankruptcy may be the best solution for relieving the pain.

- Mr. Ramsey goes on to say that he will talk anyone out of filing bankruptcy if given the chance. This kind of one-size-fits-all legal advice is irresponsible. Of course bankruptcy isn?t for everyone. A good bankruptcy attorney will explain all your options once he/she understands your situation. The opposite end of the spectrum from Ramsey?s advice would be, ?Some people don?t need bankruptcy, but I will still talk you into filing bankruptcy if given the opportunity.? Such a statement would be bad legal advice and equally irresponsible.

- Next, we come to a pitch for Ramsey?s services, ?Most bankruptcy cases can be avoided with proper help, such as our certified counselors?? I?d go a step further and say that nearly all bankruptcy cases can be avoided, just like nearly all root canals can be avoided. If you?re content to live with the pain, no one is going to force you to treat it. I explain alternatives to bankruptcy to all my clients. When I believe one of those alternatives is in the client?s best interests, I advise accordingly. I?m not unique; any reputable bankruptcy lawyer does the same thing. Unlike Mr. Ramsey, we don?t eliminate options that may be in our clients? best interests without understanding the individual facts of the situation.

- The article ends with this quote: ?I know from personal experience the pain of bankruptcy, foreclosure, and lawsuits. Been there, done that, got the t-shirt, and it is not worth it.? If you?ve read this far, you can probably already point out the flaw in his reasoning. Bankruptcy can?t be lumped in with foreclosure and lawsuits. Bankruptcy typically is the cure for people who have already been sued or been served with foreclosure papers.

Mr. Ramsey filed his own bankruptcy years ago. I wonder why he feels it wasn?t worth it? Would he have been in the same position he is in now had he not discharged his debt? Does he believe he would have been further ahead if he?d not taken advantage of the fresh start bankruptcy provided him? Would he have preferred debt collectors to keep hounding him and garnisheeing his wages to keep him from getting ahead?

I?ve never met Dave Ramsey. He might be a lovely person and some of his advice might be great for certain people. But his blanket advice to avoid bankruptcy, even when it?s the best solution for your particular problems, is simply poor legal advice. If you want the ?Truth About Dave Ramsey?s Opinion of Bankruptcy,? visit his website or listen to his radio program. If you want the ?Truth About Bankruptcy,? contact a local bankruptcy attorney.

What do you think? Is Dave Ramsey right when he says bankruptcy should be the last resort for everyone? I welcome your comments below.

1 dead, 7 hurt in shooting at Toronto mall

Mark Blinch / Reuters

People stand outside the Toronto Eaton Centre shopping mall on Saturday after the shooting.

By msnbc.com staff

One person was killed and seven others were injured Saturday evening at a shopping mall shooting?in the heart of downtown Toronto, officials said.

Toronto police Constable Victor Kwong said?an interior search of the two-block-long mall?ended with?the shooter?still at-large, CP24 television reported.

One victim, a 25-year-old man,?was pronounced dead at the scene;?two victims, a man in his 20s and a 13-year-old boy,?were in critical condition,?Kwong said. Two women and a man?were seriously wounded and one woman was grazed by a bullet.

?A 30-year-old pregnant woman?injured during the rush out of the mall?went into?labor, CP24 reported.

Police Chief Bill Blair said at a news conference that bystanders hit by gunfire were in the?"general vicinity" of a targeted victim, CP24 reported. The 13-year-old boy was a "totally innocent bystander," he said.

Police, firefighters and paramedics swarmed Eaton Centre after reports emerged of a shooting at 6:23 p.m. near the food court, CTV television reported.

Video from the scene showed paramedics attending to what appeared to be a victim inside the mall. Paramedics were also seen rushing a male on a stretcher into an ambulance.

The 280-store mall was shut and evacuated, CTV reported.

Police sealed off several surrounding intersections.

Photos from the scene showed shoppers flooding out of the mall into the downtown streets, which are among the busiest in Canada's largest?city.

Blue Jays player sprints away as shots fired

CP24 television reporter Jackie Crandles said she heard police and security "running around the mall yelling at people to get out of the mall, that the shooter was still inside, and that unless they wanted to get shot, they should leave."

Toronto Blue Jays third baseman Brett Lawrie tweeted that he was "pretty sure someone just let off a round (of) bullets in eaton center mall" and that he "just sprinted out of the mall."

Ujjawal Patel, 28, told The Globe and Mail?newspaper he was inside the Eaton Centre when he heard 12 to 15 shots ring out. He quickly fled, he said.

"I was so scared,"?Patel told the newspaper. "If it can happen in the Eaton Centre, it can happen anywhere."

Marcus Neves-Polonio, a 19-year-old food court busser, told The Globe and Mail he was walking when a man started firing near the Big Smoke Burger.

Neves-Polonio said he saw one person shot in the chest and two people on the ground. He ducked under a table.

"I just hoped he wouldn't go in my direction," he told the newspaper.?

Toronto Mayor Rob Ford visited the scene and offered condolences to shooting victims and their families and vowed to support victims and police, CTV reported.

"This incident is absolutely terrible," Ford said, according to CP24. "We want to apprehend the shooter as fast as possible."

Toronto mall shooting: 1 dead, 7 hurt

TORONTO (AP) ? A gunman fired shots in a crowded food court in one of Canada's busiest malls Saturday killing a man and injuring seven others, police said.

Police Chief Bill Blair said the shooting at Eaton Centre in downtown Toronto targeted one individual and there were a number of innocent bystanders. Police constable Victor Kwong said two people were in critical condition after being shot at the Eaton Centre in downtown Toronto, including a 13-year old boy. The 25-year-old man who was killed died at the scene, he said.

Kwong said six people were shot in all, including the deceased. Two people were trampled on and pushed, including a pregnant woman who went into labor after she was pushed, he said.

Blair said investigators have a description of the suspect.

"A lot of innocent people were hurt and a lot of innocent people were put at risk," Blair said. "We will be relentless in our pursuit of the individual."

Witnesses said multiple shots were fired in the mall's food court and that hundreds of panicked shoppers sprinted for the exits. The mall, which is popular with tourists, was evacuated.

Swarms of people watched from outside as an injured man with visible bullet wounds was wheeled out on a stretcher.

Toronto Blue Jays baseball player Brett Lawrie was in the mall when the shooting took place and was one of the first to take to Twitter to break the news.

"Pretty sure someone just let off a round bullets in eaton center mall ... Wow just sprinted out of the mall ... through traffic," he tweeted. "People sprinting up the stairs right from where we just were ... Wow wow wow."

He later tweeted that he was "Rattled right now."

Marcus Neves-Polonio, 19, was working in the food court when he saw a man pull out a gun and start firing. At least two people were on the ground, he said.

"All of a sudden a herd of people were just running toward us, a massive crowd of people screaming, running, freaking out," said Hannah Stewart, 21, a shopper. "We saw this girl, sitting on the ground, and she had blood on her toes." The girl appeared to have been one of the victims and told Stewart she had just been shot.

Another victim said he was hit in the leg by a stray bullet.

"We had just gone shopping. We heard shots and hit the ground. A couple of seconds later I got hit," said Nicholas, who declined to provide his last name in an interview on CP24 television as he left the hospital. "I actually ran. It was a survival instinct. I'm tired but I'm pretty good."

He said he didn't see the shooter. "Nothing surprises me, but out in the open? Come on," he said.

Tonya Mahmood said her sister was shot in the leg but is doing better.

"We're just waiting to see if she'll need surgery," she told CP24 outside the hospital. "She's one of the nicest persons in the whole world. She was just shopping with her friends and she got shot. It's just heartbreaking. We're so lucky. We're thanking God. My parents are thanking God that it was the leg. It could have been anywhere else."

Erica Solmes, who manages the McDonald's in the mall's food court, said she heard about 15 shots ring out before a stampede of people made a dash for the exits.

Blair called the Eaton Centre an iconic landmark in Toronto, Canada's largest city.

"Any place for discharging a firearm in Toronto is dangerous. In the food court of the Eaton Centre on a Saturday evening, it's not only dangerous, it's outrageous," he said. "I believe every Torontonian is shocked and appalled by this crime."

Toronto prides itself on being one of the safest cities in North America. Many Canadians have long taken comfort in the peacefulness of their communities and are nervous about anything that might indicate they are moving closer to their American counterparts.

In 2005, a 15-year-old girl was killed during the Christmas holidays just north of the mall in a shooting that shocked the city during a year of record gun deaths in Toronto. In that case, Toronto teen Jane Creba was shopping with family on busy Yonge Street when she was caught in the crossfire of a shootout between rival gangs.

"Today harkens back to that terrible moment," Blair said. "I am very sadly reminded of that. That was one of the most tragic and shocking events that ever took place in Toronto."

Kwong said police are in the process of reviewing security tapes. He said they had concluded a search of the mall.

"It's absolutely terrible," Toronto Mayor Rob Ford said.

Ontario Premier Dalton McGuinty called it a case of "senseless, tragic violence" and expressed his condolences to the victims and their families.

The area around the mall was quickly blocked off after the shooting and the Eaton Centre itself was evacuated and closed down. A portion of a major subway line, which services the mall, was also temporarily shut down.

Police spent much of Saturday evening trying to clear out thousands of people who were milling around outside the mall, mostly trying to figure out what happened.

Health and Fitness Friday

Summer is here! Like many of you I have a challenge being consistent with my diet and exercise. Maintaining a healthy life I believe is essential to happiness. It is unfortunate many of us don?t put our health first. Although I am aware of the benefits, I too find myself indulging in foods that are high in sugar and letting multiple days go by without exercise.

Over a year ago I began a South Beach diet series. I wasn?t very consistent with the post or the diet for that fact. When you fall of the wagon you just have to get back on. I am going to begin a Health and Fitness Friday Series. The purpose of the blog is to promote happiness and well being in women. ? ? ?We are a supporter of fashion therapy. We want our ladies to look good and feel good. We look the best in our clothes when our bodies are healthy and fit.

?

I try to educate myself as much as possible on how to maintain a healthy lifestyle. As I mentioned I am a big supporter of The South Beach Diet. During different times in my life I followed the diet. During that time I was in my best body. I ate clean, after being on the diet for over 60 days I stopped craving foods high in sugar and processed foods. I am a self-proclaimed foodie. I love good food. While doing the South Beach Diet I found awesome recipes.?

I prefer not to call South Beach a diet because it is truly a lifestyle. The core of the plan is lean protein and complex carbohydrates. One of the ways that I add flavor is with cheese. Usually goat cheese, feta or blue cheese. Once you maintain this diet you will notice a change in your palette. Hence, the word eating clean. The flavor of vegetables will burst in your mouth, literally. Some of you maybe thinking I can?t imagine that? If you are a person who is indulges in foods that are high in fat and sugar I realize it?s hard for you to phantom truly enjoying a healthy clean meal. I have been on both sides of the fence.

Like many women, I am an emotional eater. I love comfort food. Rich pasta?s dishes and desserts. Like I said, because I have been on both sides I can truly tell you the difference. When I am indulging in poor eating habits, it becomes like an addiction. The more sugar-enriched foods I eat the more I crave. Same with foods, which are high in fat. It is a scientific reasoning behind why we become addicted to these foods.

?

Sigh? This was to be an introduction, but of course I am long winded. Please check out Health and Fitness Fridays. If you are already fit and maintain a healthy lifestyle please comment and inspire us who are having challenges. When I fall off the wagon I have to pick myself back up. But I know it would make it easier if I had some support. I am going to look to you my friend to help me on this journey.

Gary Hall Jr. will cheer on swimmers at US trials | Washington ...

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) ? Gary Hall Jr. has gone from Olympic competitor to Olympic cheerleader.

The 10-time medalist and recently elected member of the U.S. Olympic Hall of Fame stopped by the CenturyLink Center on Thursday to check the progress of pool construction for the U.S. Swim Trials that start June 25.

His last competition before he announced his retirement came at the 2008 trials in the same building.

"When I walk in here it brings back a lot of nostalgia," Hall said. "Yeah, it's an emotional experience, seeing this. I haven't been on a pool deck for a swim meet in months. I went to the NCAA championships this year. To revisit this venue and see this construction going on, it's moving."

Construction is ahead of schedule on the competition pool in the arena and the warm-up pool in the adjacent convention hall. Trials CEO Harold Cliff said the competition pool could be filled with water on Friday.

Hall, known almost as much for his flair as for his swimming, is now an ambassador for the sport in addition to working as a diabetes healthcare consultant. He was diagnosed with the disease in 1999.

This is a big summer for him. He'll be back in Omaha next month to root for Michael Phelps, Ryan Lochte, Missy Franklin, Natalie Coughlin and all the rest of the swimmers competing for spots on the U.S. team. In July, he'll be inducted into the hall.

In three Olympics, Hall totaled two golds, two silvers and one bronze in individual competition. He also captured three golds, a silver and a bronze as part of relay teams.

He finished fourth in his final race, the 50-meter freestyle at the 2008 trials. He walked away a contented man even though he didn't make the Olympic team.

"It made it a lot easier knowing there wasn't anything left in the sport to accomplish," he said. "I don't have any regrets. That doesn't mean I don't miss it."

The 37-year-old Hall said he only swims for recreation to stay fit. He good-naturedly cut off someone who pointed out that Dara Torres, who turned 45 in April, will be at the trials trying to make her sixth Olympic team. Her specialty is the 50-meter freestyle, same as it was for Hall.

"Gosh, I wish I had a nickel for every time I'm reminded Dara Torres is tearing it up at closer to 50 than 40," he said. "I know what she's done is unbelievable. I tried at 33, and I know how tough it is as you get older, and I feel like I pushed it as far as I could."

Nathan Adrian is now regarded as the top sprinter in U.S. swimming, a point of pride to Hall.

"I'm biased," he said. "I had the opportunity to train with Nathan for a lot of years prior to my retirement. So based on that alone I would like to see him perform well."

Phelps, who plans to retire after the London Games, will be the focus at the trials. Phelps won a record eight golds at Beijing in 2008, and Hall compared Phelps' status with that of Jesse Owens.

"Those who come and witness Michael Phelps' performance here at the trials will be telling their grandkids about being able to see him compete," Hall said.

Of course, Lochte beat Phelps in both the 200 free and the 200 individual medley at last year's world championships.

"He's already, based on his existing accomplishments, a legend of the sport," Hall said of Lochte. "Whether or not he'll be able to fill Michael Phelps' flippers remains to be seen."

Hall said his being voted into the Olympic hall of fame was humbling. He'll be inducted July 12 in Chicago as one of only 10 male swimmers in the hall.

"What's really important to express is that through my swimming career, I was not that guy who was singularly focused on the sport. But I was singularly focused on the Olympics," he said. "That was the one meet I really cared about and would turn out for. So to be recognized by the Olympic movement really means a lot to me."
